Many of us pre-meds struggle with finding exactly why it is that we decided healthcare was the right field for us. Maybe you or a loved one had a close and life-altering encounter with a healthcare professional, or maybe you watched Grey’s Anatomy and fell in love. Maybe it’s the desire to make others feel better and help them lead a healthy life. Personally, I decided healthcare was the field for me because I wanted to find a way to make the world a healthier place for everyone to live in.
As a child, my favorite stories were the ones my father would tell me of his time in Africa serving as a volunteer under Doctors without Borders. It was through him that I learned of undernourished children, the perseverance of preventable illnesses, mortality rates of pregnant women, and the racial disparities surrounding access to healthcare. Over time, I became interested in ways I could contribute to making the world a healthier place where everyone could receive quality healthcare. Although I am only one person, I hope that as a future physician I can do my part to improve global health and bring awareness to global health issues.
